Tips and tricks: The eyes have it all

When doing a portrait, make sure the eyes have a good light in them. "Dead" eyes are usually monotonously lit and without that highlight we love to see. Even if the goal is to get an empty and dead look, getting the correct light into the eye is crucial. The shape, size, and position of the specular highlight in the eyes is important.

Tip to check the sharpness: Sometimes sharpness is not easy to check in the back of the LCD. If you zoom on the eyes and you can see individual eyelashes then your image is sharp, if they look a blur of black, then the image is not sharp. J

How to fix deep-set eyes: Having the eyes a little further back from the eyebrow is a feature that causes deep shadows in the eyes. Lowering the light a little will throw light under the brow and help with the deep shadows.
